The Transportation Systems Control Laboratory focuses on the development of traffic management techniques that utilize concepts in control and estimation theory in order to make more efficient use of existing highway facilities, and to reduce freeway congestion during commute periods.

The research has benefited from the support of Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH), a collaborative program between UC Berkeley and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The laboratory has an ongoing relationship with Caltrans District 7 (Los Angeles and Ventura counties), which has an interest in projects that will provide enhanced service to their highway users. Examples of current projects and recently completed projects include: development of freeway on-ramp metering control and optimization algorithms, traffic flow modeling / identification / estimation, traffic simulation at the microscopic (vehicle-based), macroscopic (continuum-based), and hybrid (micro/macro) levels, and design and analysis of Automated Highway Systems (AHS).

Software tools have been developed to facilitate all of these endeavors. The research team has acquired many years' experience using the well-known microsimulator, VISSIM, and has applied it to test traffic control strategies.
